Why it matters
The producer
Weingut Wwe Dr H Thanisch Erben Thanisch is a family-run Mosel Riesling estate with a recorded tradition reaching back to 1636. Sofia and Christina Thanisch now manage a business in its twelfth generation, and every vineyard is planted to Riesling; the result is a range that explores one grape from dry estate wine to sweet late-harvest Doctor Spätlese.
The estate became a founding VDP member in 1910, and its family has held Berncasteler Doctor parcels for more than 200 years across seven generations. That continuity matters on the label: Doctor appears as both a dry Grosses Gewächs and a sweet Spätlese, two wines drawn from the same named site but built for very different palates.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
The holdings run across Bernkastel, Kues, Lieser and Brauneberg, four Mosel places brought together by Riesling rather than by a mixed grape portfolio. The estate wine can therefore show the breadth of its vineyards in dry, feinherb and residually sweet forms, while the named VDP.GROSSE LAGE wines narrow the focus to Badstube, Doctor, Graben and Lay.
Berncasteler Doctor is the central name in the range because the family’s parcels there have stayed with them for more than two centuries. On a bottle, Doctor signals a site-specific Riesling; in practice, it can arrive as a sweet 2024 Spätlese with peach and floral sweetness or as the dry 2023 GG with lime-like acidity and chalky extract.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
Integrated, environmentally friendly vineyard work begins with canopy management and the removal of unevenly ripened or surplus grapes. Selective hand harvesting follows, so the fruit sent to the cellar is chosen for ripeness before it becomes the dry, off-dry or sweet Riesling in bottle.
Estate-grown grapes are gently pressed and fermented spontaneously. For the Badstube, Doctor, Graben and Lay VDP.GROSSE LAGE wines, traditional 1,000-litre oak Fuder barrels are part of the process; even the youngest is more than 50 years old, so the wood supports texture and ageing without pushing vanilla or toast into the fruit.
Wines to know
The range in view
The range begins with estate Riesling in trocken, feinherb and restsüß styles. The dry estate wine is hand-picked from steep slopes, spontaneously fermented and matured in small vessels; its citrus and vineyard-peach aromas make it the brisk, fruit-led end of the line-up.
Above it sit named-site wines, including Badstube, Doctor, Graben and Lay. Berncasteler Doctor offers the clearest internal contrast: the 2024 Spätlese carries 61.1 g/l residual sugar beside 7.7 g/l acidity, while the 2023 GG trocken is dry and spent time partly in an old 10-hectolitre foudre, partly in stainless steel, then on lees until February before August bottling.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
Start with Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Spätlese 2024. It is a sweet-style Riesling from the family’s long-held Doctor parcels, and its 61.1 g/l residual sugar and 7.7 g/l acidity make the Mosel balance easy to feel rather than merely read about: peach and floral sweetness fill the palate, herbs and mineral character add detail, and salt closes the finish. It also shows why a Doctor label need not mean dry wine.
