The producer
Weinschloss Koarl Thaller is a family winery in Steiermark whose range leans firmly red: about seven bottles in ten are red wines. Koarl and Maria Thaller run the business with support from their children, while five of the family’s six siblings hold responsibility in the winery. That family structure extends into the vineyard, where Katharina and Karl Gregor Thaller take charge, and into a range built around both Austrian Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Koarl Thaller came to wine after changing careers, then studied at Silberberg and passed the master examination in viticulture and cellar management. The practical consequence is a cellar programme with room for barrique-aged reds and delayed releases, rather than a range built only for early drinking.

Where the wines begin
The Wine Castle stands above Maierhofen, amid vineyards and gardens, in Styria’s Thermen- and Vulkanland. Its official address is Maierhofbergen 24 in Großwilfersdorf. The estate’s 25 hectares lie across gently rolling ground, so its wine setting is one of slopes and vineyard contours rather than a single named site.
That location frames a broad colour and grape range. The red-heavy production brings Zweigelt, blends and Cabernet Sauvignon into the foreground, while Rosina provides a white counterpoint from the same regional setting.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
Katharina and Karl Gregor Thaller are responsible for the vineyards across approximately 25 hectares. Their work supplies fruit for a production split weighted towards red wine, and that weight continues below ground: the barrel cellar contains about 500 barriques from different vintages, principally for selected reds.
Barrique ageing is a concrete part of the estate’s approach to reds, not a decorative detail on the label. Zweigelt Reserve 2018 is documented as barrique-aged, and some red wines are held back for extended maturation. The result is a range where acidity and tannin can sit alongside dark or ripe fruit with more weight and a longer finish than a wine released straight after fermentation.
Wines to know
The range in view
Zweigelt Reserve is the clearest expression of the estate’s Austrian red side. In the 2018 wine, barrique élevage accompanies dark fruit, acidity, tannin and a persistent finish. It is a structured red rather than a simple fruit-led pour, with the grape’s fruit carried by firm shape on the palate.
Rochus widens the red range through a blend. Its current composition is listed by the winery, while its wine character centres on ripe fruit, tannin, length and capacity to age. Where Zweigelt Reserve keeps one grape in view, Rochus uses blending to build a broader red profile.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
Start with Zweigelt Reserve 2018 where it is available. It joins an Austrian red grape to barrique ageing, with dark fruit, acidity, tannin and a persistent finish all documented in the bottle. That combination explains the estate’s main direction more directly than Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which shows an international grape, or Rosina, which deliberately steps into white wine.
