The producer
Zonin 1821 is a family company, but on a scale that puts it outside ordinary family-estate comparisons. Founded in Gambellara in 1821, it now produces more than 50 million bottles a year and distributes them to more than 140 countries. The company's public claim is that it is the largest Italian family-owned producer of Prosecco. That claim is worth pausing on: the Zonin brand is built around Glera-based sparkling wine from the Triveneto, but the company behind it spans nine estates from the Veneto to Tuscany.
The current leadership is the third generation: president Domenico Zonin and vice presidents Francesco Zonin and Michele Zonin. Two centuries of continuity under one family name is unusual at any production volume. The clearest way to understand the company is in two layers: the Zonin brand, which anchors itself in Prosecco and the northern appellations of the Triveneto, and the estate portfolio, which adds Chianti Classico, Maremma, and other Italian wine regions to the picture.

Where the wines begin
Gambellara is a small hill town in the western Veneto, about thirty kilometres from Vicenza and close to the border with the Soave zone. The local denomination is Gambellara DOC, built around Garganega, the same white grape that defines Soave next door. Zonin's headquarters has sat in this town for two centuries, though the company's Prosecco production draws on the Triveneto: the broad northeast Italian triangle that covers Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Trentino-Alto Adige.

Vineyards and cellar
Zonin farms roughly 2,000 hectares of vineyard across its nine Italian estates and the Triveneto zone that supplies the Prosecco brand. The farming programme limits herbicides and uses natural fertilisation to preserve soil life, a choice that, at scale, affects vine health and the microbiological character of the soil. Artificial lakes collect rainwater and feed targeted irrigation systems, which helps manage water stress in dry seasons without drawing on natural water sources.
Prosecco DOC is produced by the Charmat method: secondary fermentation happens in pressurised stainless steel tanks rather than in bottle. This approach preserves the fresh, aromatic character of Glera and produces a lighter, cleaner mousse than traditional bottle fermentation. The short time between harvest and release keeps the wisteria and apple aromatics intact. At the Equalitas-certified estates, the annual sustainability reports cover carbon, water, and social criteria, making those properties among the more formally documented in their respective appellations.

The range in view
The Zonin portfolio divides into two distinct layers. The Zonin brand covers Prosecco DOC and still and sparkling wines from the major appellations of the Triveneto: Veneto, Friuli, and Trentino. This is the layer most visible in international retail, and Prosecco is its anchor. The nine family estates sit alongside this brand with their own labels, spanning appellations from Chianti Classico in Tuscany to the Maremma coast.
Cuvée 1821 Prosecco DOC Brut is a listed retail wine. It is made from Glera, light-bodied, with a persistent frothy mousse, and carries the aromatic signature of the grape: wisteria, fresh orchard fruit, and a clean almond note on the finish. Residual sugar falls in the brut bracket. The wine is designed for aperitivo drinking: easy to pour, immediately aromatic, and finished before the acidity becomes a question.
