Río Negro's vineyards lie in the Alto Valle, described as Argentina's southernmost wine region. River irrigation makes cultivation possible in this dry landscape. The climate is breezy, dry and temperate, and the southerly latitude brings high luminosity and a long maturation period.
Old vines remain part of the region alongside newer cool-climate plantings. Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Torrontés are among the most planted grapes, with Semillon, Trousseau, Riesling and Chardonnay also in the mix. Pinot Noir has a central place here, shaped by warm days and cool nights. For a more specific name, look for Mainqué, an old-vine sub-region associated with Pinot Noir, Semillon, Trousseau and Bordeaux blends.
