Queensland has two recognised wine GIs, Granite Belt and South Burnett. The Granite Belt lies southwest of Brisbane, centred on Stanthorpe, and its vineyards can reach beyond 1000 metres. Altitude above 800 metres helps growers meet the challenges of a subtropical climate.
Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the principal Granite Belt varieties, with Verdelho and Viognier also grown. The region is often defined by that range rather than a single signature grape. Chardonnay comes in oaked and unoaked styles. Cabernet Sauvignon can be dark and rich, with blackcurrant and dark berry flavours, while Shiraz is darkly coloured and full-flavoured.
