Kärnten is Carinthia's wine area in southern Austria, south of the main Alpine ridge. Most vineyards are alpine slopes between roughly 400 and 750 metres, with cool spring conditions and high rainfall rather than a wholly warm, lowland setting. Vineyards around Lake Wörthersee are part of the area's wine landscape. Medieval church institutions helped spread viticulture through much of Kärnten. Its white wines are associated with freshness, fruitiness and balanced acidity. New Rieden names are intended to give Kärnten wines greater recognition and support a quality push.
