Kartli follows the Mtkvari and its tributary basins in central-eastern Georgia. Vineyards lie between 300 and 700 metres, across river valleys and rolling hills, with uplands rising toward the Greater Caucasus. Winters are cold, summers are warm, and the day-to-night temperature shift is marked. The climate is cooler and more continental than Kakheti's.
Chinuri, Gori Mtsvane and Budeshuri are among Kartli's notable white grapes. Tavkveri, Shavkapito and Saperavi are among the reds. Traditional and European winemaking methods are both used, for dry wines and sparkling wines made by traditional or tank methods. Dry whites can show citrus, green apple, white flowers, stone fruit and chalky tones. Chinuri is a gentle, light- to medium-bodied white, while Tavkveri-based rosés and light reds are bright-fruited with restrained tannin.
