The Luxembourg Moselle runs along the river's 42-kilometre border with Germany, from Schengen to Wasserbillig. Its vineyards sit in a hilly limestone valley in eastern Luxembourg, where a maritime climate meets continental influence.
Around Remich, deep gypsum and Keuper marl are associated with rounder, softer wines. Near Grevenmacher, shell limestone and erosion-derived soils, cut by impermeable layers, are linked to racier, more characterful examples. Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Auxerrois are the principal varieties. Elbling goes into still and sparkling wines; the still versions can be low in alcohol, with citrus, redcurrant, green apple and pomegranate aromas.
The region also makes red and white still wines and Crémant. AOP Moselle Luxembourgeoise confirms geographic origin: wines must meet the specification and pass chemical and sensory analysis. Crémant starts with hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed grapes and spends nine months on lees in the same winery.
