Pico is a wine area in the Azores, on the archipelago's second-largest volcanic island. Its 987-hectare historic vineyard landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage property. Since the fifteenth century, long stone walls have run parallel to the rocky shore, protecting small vineyard plots from wind and seawater. The landscape preserves a cultivation system that was once much more widespread. Wine quality on Pico has improved in the contemporary period. Arinto dos Açores is more acidic than Verdelho, which is more acidic than Terrantez do Pico.
