In Colares, maritime winds cross vineyards planted in sandy soils over clay. Those sandy conditions are linked to the area's survival through the phylloxera crisis. Ramisco is Colares' red grape. Young wines can be sternly tannic and acidic, and often need extended ageing. With time, they take on a browner hue and a more evolved bouquet. Ramisco grown in calcareous clay can soften sooner. Colares also makes white Malvasia, described as fruity in both aroma and palate.
