Banat lies in southwestern Romania, across Caraș-Severin, Timiș and Arad south of the Mureș. Its vineyards occupy gently sunny slopes between 100 and 350 metres, over soils that include marl, clay, sand, gravel, pebbles and loess-like material. Mild winters, hot summers and long autumns give Banat the clearest sub-Mediterranean influence among Romania's wine regions.
Both white and red wines are made here. Chardonnay, Fetească albă, Fetească regală, Muscat Ottonel, Riesling, Sauvignon and Viognier grow alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Fetească neagră, Merlot, Pinot noir and Syrah. Riesling may show wet-stone, citrus and floral notes, while Sauvignon Blanc is described with green apple, gooseberry, cut grass and bell pepper. Cadarcă is dark-fruited, spicy and tannic; Merlot can suggest plum, blackberry and cocoa.
Viticulture has a long record in Banat. German colonists practiced it in the seventeenth century, and a 1747 inscription at Recaș records viticultural activity. Today, traditional practice sits alongside modern techniques. The official wine region includes DOC Recaș, DOC Banat, IGP Viile Timișului and IGP Viile Carașului.
