Cederberg is a wine area within Olifants River, with vineyards at 950 to 1,100 metres above sea level. Its cool Mediterranean climate differs from the coastal conditions elsewhere in the region. Weathered shale and slate cover the hillsides and high mountain slopes, while higher-clay soils are considered suitable for red cultivars. The isolated, virus-free area has little disease, which reduces chemical intervention. Cederberg wines are associated with fine-grained tannins and greater ageing potential.
