California's Central Coast runs from the San Francisco area south toward Santa Barbara, reaching inland toward Paso Robles and Livermore Valley. Its climate changes considerably across that distance. Cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay share the region with warmer Rhône, Bordeaux and Zinfandel styles.
San Luis Obispo is associated with Rhône blends, heritage Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the Santa Cruz Mountains, vineyards can sit above the fog line. Pinot Noir is ageworthy, combining Old World finesse with New World fruit, while Chardonnay is crisp, mineral-flavored and moderately oaked.
Santa Barbara's east-west valleys funnel marine fog inland. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow in the cooler west, while bolder Rhône and Bordeaux varieties suit the east. Santa Maria Valley's cool, windy conditions favor intensely flavored Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that retain acidity.
