Why it matters
The producer
Joly-Champagne links vineyard ownership to estate production. As a récoltant-manipulant, the family grows grapes and makes the Champagne, so the name on the bottle belongs to the people working the fruit as well as to the cellar that turns it into wine. The home address is Troissy, within the Vallée de la Marne, and the estate works across five communes.
The grape balance gives the house a clear centre of gravity. Four-fifths of the vineyard is Meunier, the black grape that anchors the Prestige Blanc de Noirs and Les Terres des Picoites. Cuvée Spéciale takes a different route, with 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Meunier. The range therefore shifts from a Chardonnay-led blend to wines that place Meunier alone in the glass.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
Troissy is the village attached to Joly-Champagne, while the Vallée de la Marne supplies the wider regional setting. That geography appears most directly in Les Terres des Picoites, whose grapes come exclusively from Troissy parcels. The bottle narrows the estate's five-commune footprint to one named village and one parcel selection.
The label names also mark different kinds of Champagne. Cuvée Spéciale is a blended Brut built from Chardonnay and Meunier. Prestige Blanc de Noirs is a vintage wine made from 100% Pinot Meunier, with the white colour of Champagne made from black grapes. Les Terres des Picoites keeps the same grape but tightens the place reference to Troissy.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
Meunier dominates the vineyard at 80%, followed by equal 10% shares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. That planting balance sets the house's raw material: Meunier is available in quantity for the estate's pure-Meunier wines, while Chardonnay has a smaller vineyard role but becomes the leading grape in Cuvée Spéciale.
The cellar preserves those different purposes. Cuvée Spéciale Brut combines 70% Chardonnay with 30% Pinot Meunier, producing the estate's Chardonnay-led expression. Prestige Blanc de Noirs 2020 uses 100% Pinot Meunier and makes the grape the entire subject of the vintage wine. Les Terres des Picoites also uses 100% Meunier from Troissy parcels, combining 2020 fruit with reserve wines from the two previous vintages.
Wines to know
The range in view
Cuvée Spéciale Brut is the blended starting point of the range. Its 70% Chardonnay and 30% Meunier composition places a white-grape-led profile beside the estate's dominant black grape. In the glass it is golden, with yellow apple, discreet citrus, sweet almond paste and chalk hints. Its role is broad and blend-focused, with the flavour profile moving from orchard fruit to almond and mineral notes.
Prestige Blanc de Noirs 2020 turns the emphasis fully toward Meunier. It is a vintage Champagne made from 100% Pinot Meunier, with a bright yellow colour and an intense nose of cooked fruit, fig jam, prune and dried apricot. The palate is full and broad, carrying preserved-fruit richness alongside freshness, while tobacco and dried herbs appear at the finish. Foie gras, spiced bread and orange marmalade suit its cooked-fruit register.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
Start with Prestige Blanc de Noirs 2020. It is the clearest first bottle because it puts Joly-Champagne's main grape, Pinot Meunier, at 100% and gives that choice a complete sensory arc. The bright yellow wine opens with fig jam, prune and dried apricot, fills the mouth with preserved-fruit richness, then closes with freshness, tobacco and dried herbs. It is a vintage Champagne with enough breadth for foie gras, especially alongside spiced bread and orange marmalade. The bottle shows the estate's Meunier focus in a form that can be tasted from first aroma through finish.
