At about 41 degrees south, Tasmania is Australia's cool maritime wine region. The Tasman Sea, Bass Strait and Indian Ocean bring wind and rain, while storms, frost and botrytis make sheltered vineyard sites important. Dolerite-capped mountains help provide that shelter. Vineyards sit mainly in the north and south, with an East Coast stretch from St Helens to Richmond.
Pinot Noir accounts for about 44 percent of plantings and works in both red and sparkling wine. Chardonnay makes up about 23 percent and is known for clean acidity and minerality. Riesling appears in sparkling, dry and sweet styles. Sparkling wine made up 38 percent of production in the 2024 vintage, with styles ranging from dry and fruit-driven to richer examples.
Tasmania is the regional name on the label and is protected in the United Kingdom as a Protected Geographical Indication wine name.
