Tyrol

North Tyrol's protected, sunny vineyard sites and sharp day-night temperature changes shape wines that can be ripe yet fresh. Burgundian whites and reds remain central, while PIWI varieties are gaining ground. The Tirol designation covers the whole Austrian province.

Producer coverage

No producers listed yet

We do not yet list a producer in Tyrol. The region guide, map and nearby wine places remain open to explore.

Protected, sunny sites in North Tyrol support a modest spread of vineyards with records reaching back to Sautens around 965. Today, the wine centres include the Zillertal, Innsbruck, Telfs and communities in the Oberland. Tarrenz has the largest vineyard area and number of growers in Tirol.

In the Oberland, stable autumn weather and little fog can leave grapes hanging longer, bringing more ripeness, extract, body and alcohol. Warm days and cool nights help the wines keep their acidity. Both white and red wines are made here, with Burgundian varieties prominent: Chardonnay, Sylvaner and Weißburgunder among the whites; Blauburgunder and Zweigelt among the reds. Solaris and Cabernet Jura are part of a newer wave of disease-resistant PIWI plantings.

Tyrol is the English regional name. Tirol is the protected designation that covers the whole Austrian province and sits within Bergland, Austria's smallest wine-growing region, alongside Vorarlberg, Salzburg, Upper Austria and Carinthia.
