Tirol is the protected wine designation for Austria's province of Tyrol, known in English as Tyrol. It belongs to Bergland, Austria's smallest wine-growing region, which also includes Vorarlberg, Salzburg, Upper Austria and Carinthia. White and red wines, especially from Burgundian varieties, are made under the designation. Tarrenz is Tirol's largest wine-growing municipality by vineyard area and number of growers. The maximum permitted yield is 10,000 kilograms of grapes per hectare. Wines sold as Tirol generally need an official quality-check number, except in stated cases for sparkling wine.
