Roussillon lies between the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean and Catalonia. Grenache and Carignan lead many reds, while Macabeu and Grenache Gris appear in whites and fortified wines. Banyuls, Maury and Rivesaltes are part of its vin doux naturel history, but Calce, Vingrau and the Agly valley also make dry wines. On the Côte Vermeille, terraces above the sea are home to Collioure and Banyuls. Schist, limestone and the coast give the wines a stony, salty, herbal character.
