Epirus sits in mountainous northwestern Greece, where vineyards spread across plains and climb higher slopes. The slope vineyards have poorer medium-lime clay soils and demand more work, while the plains are more fertile. At altitude, cool, humid conditions, snowy winters and slow ripening help grapes keep their acidity.
Wine production gathers around Ioannina, notably in Zitsa and Metsovo. Debina is the leading indigenous white grape. It gives fresh, tangy whites with medium body and distinctive acidity, and it also suits sparkling wine. The regional red grapes are Vlahiko and Bekari. Vlahiko wines are bright and medium in depth with subtle tannins; Bekari gives deeper colour and sharper tannins. Harvest takes place from early to mid-October.
