Bükk is one of Upper Hungary's three wine districts. It became a wine region in 1970 and has about 870 hectares under cultivation. Its vineyard area has been shrinking, and the district often supplies grapes. Wine has a long history around Miskolc. Vladislaus II approved the city's wine charter in 1503, and Avas Hill developed a large underground cellar system in the eighteenth century.
