Eger is one of Upper Hungary's three wine districts, at the foot of the Bükk Mountains and between the Bükk and Mátra ranges. It sits at 160 to 180 metres. Volcanic rhyolite tuff, clay-rich brown soils, limestone, slate, zeolite, marl and sandstone make up its varied ground. The region's cool conditions bring lively acidity, rich aromas and restrained tannin. Its reds often have fruit, spice and a long finish. Kékfrankos can show dark colour, black pepper, plum, soft tannin and bright acidity. Hárslevelű also has a close association with Eger. The region is placing greater emphasis on quality and origin protection, and the name Bikavér is reserved for wines from the Eger and Szekszárd PDOs.
