Villány makes full-bodied reds with dark berry and plum fruit, earthy spice and firm structure. It is described as Hungary's first red-wine appellation, and its wines have serious ageing potential. Villány played a role in the revival of Hungarian oenology after phylloxera. Hungary's first full-scale origin-protection system was created here, and Villányi Franc is a protected-origin designation for Cabernet Franc.
