Costa Teatina & Chieti hills

The Chieti hills and coast grow Trebbiano, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Merlot, Passerina and Pecorino. The sea and nearby mountains both influence this part of Abruzzo, where red and white wines share the map.

Chieti is Abruzzo's warm south: hills that roll down to the Costa Teatina, where Montepulciano ripens mellow and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, the region's cherry-bright rosé, sits naturally beside the fish that dominates the coastal table. Most of the province's wine leaves under the region-wide appellations, and the everyday register here is soft and generously fruited.

Small names, fair prices

Ambition shows in the small appellations: Terre Tollesi around Tollo, Villamagna in its named village for concentrated Montepulciano, and Ortona along the coast. They remain local names even inside Italy, which keeps their prices closer to the everyday bottles than the quality suggests.
