Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo may be made anywhere in the region, and these region-wide bottlings are most of what Abruzzo ships: plummy, honest reds and fresh whites from family cellars and co-operatives alike. Because the appellation spans the whole map, the producer's name tells you more than the place name does.
Three cellars to know
Fattoria La Valentina works the hills at Spoltore. Cantina Zaccagnini, at Bolognano, fixes a vine twig to the neck of every bottle. Ciavolich has made wine in the province of Pescara since 1853. All three are profiled on this site.
