Biferno takes its name from the river that runs through the designation. Its lower vineyards receive maritime warmth, and the wines are generally lower in acidity and more structured than those of Pentro. The DOC includes red, white and rosato wines, with Superiore and Riserva categories for red. Biferno Rosso is dry, velvety and moderately tannic, moving from ruby to garnet as it ages. Riserva requires three years of ageing.
