Codru sits in central Moldova, where valleys, ravines, ridges, cliffs and streams break up the terrain. About 79% of the area lies on slopes of 1 to 10 degrees. The climate brings mild, short winters, long warm summers and relatively low rainfall. Chernozem is widespread, with brown and grey soils also present.
White grapes account for about 63% of the area producing Codru PGI wines, and whites and sparkling wines are a particular focus. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Rhein Riesling appear alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The whites range from lemon yellow to golden, while white sparkling wines can have delicate fruity or floral aromas. Rosés may suggest peach, apricot and forest berries; reds can show berry fruit, sour cherry, wild plum, cinnamon and sweet red pepper.
New grape varieties, including French introductions, were planted here from the beginning of the nineteenth century. Codru also has underground wine storages that can run for hundreds of kilometres and hold more than two million collection bottles. On a label, Codru names a protected geographical indication, not a grape variety.
