Bairrada sits between Aveiro and Coimbra, where Atlantic weather meets clay-limestone, sandy and alluvial soils. Winters are cool, long and rainy; summers are hot but moderated by west and northwest winds. A temperature range of about 20°C during ripening helps preserve acidity and freshness. Baga is the leading red grape, and on clay it can produce deeply coloured, tannic wines with the ability to age. Bical and Fernão Pires, known locally as Maria Gomes, are important white grapes, while Bical also contributes to sparkling wine. Bairrada became a denomination of origin in 1980. Its DOC covers white, red, rosé and sparkling wines; wines outside the rules may use the Beira Atlântico regional indication. The region's history includes the uprooting of vineyards during an 18th-century dispute involving Port producers.
