Castelão is at the heart of Palmela's still red wines, which must contain at least 67% of the grape. In the area's warm, loose sandy soils, it can develop complexity and depth. Palmela's reds are aromatic and structured, and can age; young examples may show cherry, gooseberry and raspberry aromas. Palmela is a protected wine name with Protected Designation of Origin status. Its hills belong to a mountainous vineyard area that also includes Arrábida, São Luís, Rasca, Barris, São Francisco and Azeitão.
