South of Lisbon, Península de Setúbal stretches around the Tejo and Sado river systems, where sandy plains give way to the Serra da Arrábida. Summers are hot and dry, winters mild and rainy, and humidity remains high. Arrábida is cooler and more Atlantic in feel because of its altitude and proximity to the sea; limestone and clay-calcareous soils replace the deep fine sands of the plains.
Palmela and Setúbal are the region's designations of origin, alongside the Península de Setúbal geographical indication. Setúbal is reserved for Moscatel de Setúbal and Moscatel Roxo, while Moscatel Graúdo is used mainly in fortified wines. Palmela reds must contain at least 67% Castelão, also known as Periquita. They are still, aromatic and structured, with young wines showing cherry, gooseberry and raspberry aromas. Arinto and Fernão Pires are the region's two dominant white grapes.
