Muntenia & Oltenia Hills has eight named DOC areas: Dealu Mare, Pietroasa, Ştefăneşti, Sâmbureşti, Drăgăşani, Banu Mărăcine, Segarcea and Mehedinţi. On Romanian labels, DOC identifies a geographically delimited place whose qualities come essentially from natural and human factors. IG also identifies origin, under a less stringent definition.
The regional reference ranges from dry and sparkling whites to rich, aromatic purple reds. Tămâioasa Românească is a naturally sweet or semi-sweet white and has substantial distribution in Dealu Mare and Oltenia. Fetească Neagră is described as a medium-bodied light red, while Băbească Neagră is full-bodied with a delicate bouquet and a slight clove note. Pietroasa, Ştefăneşti and Drăgăşani offer some of the clearest contrasts within the region.
