Mencía is Bierzo's main red grape, accounting for 70.5% of the grapes grown in its production area. It ripens early, and Bierzo Mencía wines are associated with a spicy character and medium body. The permitted varieties also include Garnacha Tintorera, Godello, Doña Blanca and Palomino. Mencía is the clearest place to start on a Bierzo label, but it is not the area's only permitted grape.
