Rueda is the protected geographical name of a Spanish Designation of Origin on a high plain in northwestern-central Castilla y León. Verdejo is its principal white grape, with Viura, Sauvignon Blanc and Palomino as complementary varieties. Rueda Verdejo can feel silky or creamy on the palate while retaining cleansing acidity. The wording on the label matters. A wine labelled Rueda may contain 50% Verdejo, while Rueda Verdejo requires at least 85%. Reserva and Gran Reserva apply only to wines that meet specified ageing and sensory requirements. Production and bottling take place in registered wineries within the defined production zone.
