Río Platense maps to Uruguay's Metropolitan wine region of Canelones, Montevideo and San José. The Río de la Plata basin, Atlantic conditions and regular rainfall moderate summer heat, bringing freshness as well as balanced alcohol and acidity to the wines.
Canelones produces about 60% of Uruguay's wine and is the country's viticultural heart. Cool summer nights, abundant water and varied soils support structured wines. Montevideo has some of Uruguay's oldest vineyards; fertile sediment-derived soils and average annual rainfall mean routine artificial irrigation is unnecessary. San José shares Canelones's climate and soils and is known for classic Tannat.
