Great Southern is a wine area within Western Australia and the state's coolest wine region. It extends roughly 100 kilometres north to south and 150 kilometres east to west, across five subregions with Mediterranean, maritime and continental conditions. Albany and Denmark are the more maritime parts of the region. Mount Barker, Porongurup and Frankland River are more continental. Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the principal varieties. Soils are mainly lateritic gravelly or sandy loams, including sandy loams derived from granite bedrock. Great Southern Shiraz can show liquorice, spice, pepper, black cherry and plum, often with balanced oak.
