Northern Alsace follows the Bas-Rhin wine route around Marlenheim, Molsheim, Barr and Andlau. Sylvaner and Pinot Blanc have a larger role here than farther south, and much of Alsace's Crémant d'Alsace is made in this stretch. Above Andlau, the granitic grand cru sites of Kastelberg, Wiebelsberg and Moenchberg give Riesling a cooler, more mineral character than in the warmer central zone. The wines are generally fresher and lighter than those from central and southern Alsace.
