Southern Alsace runs from Rouffach and Westhalten through Guebwiller to Thann, where the Vosges curve and the slopes steepen. Volcanic geology becomes more prominent here, and the wines have more density and intensity than the lighter northern styles. Rangen, the volcanic basalt hill above Thann, sits at the southern end of the route. Zind-Humbrecht grows Riesling and Pinot Gris there, wines that can be tightly mineral when young and need time to open. Near Guebwiller, Schlumberger has large parcels across Kessler, Kitterlé, Saering and Spiegel.
