Pronounced NAH-ha, Nahe wine country follows the Nahe River and its tributaries, the Glan and Alsenz. More than 180 soil formations run through its vineyards, the result of volcanic eruptions and earth movements. Slate, volcanic porphyry, loess and loam all appear here. The Hunsrück shelters the region from cold winds, and the valley has mild temperatures, plenty of sunshine and dry conditions.

Riesling is Nahe's leading grape, while Pinot varieties are also widely planted. White grapes cover three quarters of the vineyard area. Riesling can be light and fresh or powerful, round and sweet, often with crisp acidity and minerality. Quartzite can give it a delicate peach and apricot character, while calcareous soils produce fuller wines with ripe yellow fruit.
