Macedonia is a Greek wine region where Xinomavro is the principal indigenous red grape of northern and central Macedonia. Its main Xinomavro PDO zones are Naoussa, Amyndeon and Goumenissa, with Rapsani as an additional zone. Xinomavro appears in red, white, rosé, sparkling, dry, semi-sweet and sweet styles.
Naoussa vineyards lie on the southeastern slopes of Mount Vermio. Amyndeon is a high-elevation plateau between the Vermio, Vitsi and Voras mountains, with Vegoritida and Petres lakes shaping the landscape. Goumenissa sits on Mount Paiko's southeastern foothills, while Plagies Melitona lies on Mount Meliton's western slopes near Neos Marmaras. Florina is cool, mountainous and continental, with lakes that moderate its climate. Its broader PGI includes Amyndeon vineyards. Assyrtiko grown in Macedonia is softer and fruitier than the Santorini expression.
