The changes in altitude give this appellation a broad internal range. Mavrodaphne of Patras is a sweet red appellation in northern-central Achaia, established in 1971. Muscat of Patras is smaller and makes sweet whites from sun-dried grapes or by fortification. Wines from privately owned, low-yield vineyards may carry the term grand cru. Muscat of Rio Patras is a smaller coastal zone east of Patras and Rio, where urban construction has restricted vineyard land.
