Five districts make up Upper Pannon: Etyek-Buda, Mór, Neszmély, Pannonhalma and Sopron. The Danube and a chain of hills link this northern Hungarian region, whose soils run from Pannonhalma loess to clay beside Lake Fertő.
Fresh, lively whites with high acidity are the regional starting point. Cool air currents crossing Central Europe from the North Sea help support crisp styles, particularly Chardonnay. Etyek-Buda makes light-bodied still and sparkling wines with plenty of flavour, Mór is closely associated with Ezerjó, and Neszmély is known for light, fruity whites. Pannonhalma grows both white and red varieties.
Sopron takes a different turn. The slightly warmer conditions around Lake Fertő support fuller reds, including Kékfrankos, alongside fresh whites, sparkling wines, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and blends.
