Auckland's modern wine region took shape in the early twentieth century, when Croatian, Lebanese and English winemakers established it. The region includes Waiheke Island, historic West Auckland and Matakana, whose volcanic, clay-rich soils sit within a temperate maritime climate.
Waiheke has a long association with Cabernet blends, alongside Syrah, Chardonnay, Montepulciano, Petit Verdot, Viognier and Pinot Gris. Its Syrah is intense, aromatic, elegant and pure-fruited. In West Auckland, Kumeu is known for particularly refined Chardonnay. Matakana makes Pinot Gris, Syrah and Cabernet-based wines with body and texture. Its Pinot Gris can be fleshy and weighty, with ripe stone fruit, pear and spice. Across Auckland, red blends are dense yet elegant, while Chardonnay combines ripe tropical fruit with fresh acidity.
