Steiermark is the German name for Styria, the wine area between the Alps and the Adriatic. Its climate is generally temperate, wind-sheltered and rainy, with enough local variation to create many microclimates. Some of its vineyards are steep enough to require work on foot. The named areas offer a useful guide to the wines. Südsteiermark is associated with Sauvignon Blanc, from fresh, fragrant wines to weightier examples. The warmer Süd-Oststeiermark, also called Vulkanland, is known for Traminer and freshness retained by cool nights. Weststeiermark follows the Alpine foothills and is identified with high-acid Schilcher from Blauer Wildbacher.
