Weststeiermark is a narrow wine area along Styria's Alpine foothills. It is defined by Schilcher, a high-acid pink wine made from Blauer Wildbacher. Schilcher is fresh, aromatic and youthful, though it can also age. Viticulture here has documented pre-Roman and Roman roots. Schilcher was once mostly a local rustic wine, then moved toward sparkling production and export. The four Ortsweingebiete are Ligist, Stainz, Deutschlandsberg and Eibiswald.
