Cotnari lies mainly on the Cotnari-Hârlău Coast in the Moldavian Plateau. Sunny slopes and autumn conditions help sugar accumulate for white wines from Grasă de Cotnari, Fetească Albă, Tămâioasă Românească and Frâncușă. In favourable years, the area can also produce botrytised sweet wines. Its soils are sandy, humus-rich and rich in changeable bases. Local wine processing has moved from empirical methods towards scientific research and modern laboratory work.
