Alto Piemonte is a cooler, higher wine area within Piemonte, with Nebbiolo-based blends grown on volcanic and glacial soils. Its Nebbiolo tends toward redder fruit and less tannic structure than examples from southern Piemonte. The collective area includes Boca, Bramaterra, Faro, Gattinara, Ghemme, Lessona and Sizzano. As Barolo and Barbaresco grew in popularity, many vineyards here were grubbed up. Warming conditions have since brought Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo back into wider discussion.
