La Mancha is a large wine area in central Spain, spread across broad, flat land with no major elevations. Red Miocene limestone sediments are visible at the surface. Winters can be severely cold and summers extremely hot. The area is notably dry, receiving roughly 300 to 400 millimetres of rain and about 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Its microclimate limits the arrival of moist winds. Documented vineyards date to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, after Reconquista repopulation. Many producers were established after 1940, and barrel-aged wines remain an important part of the area. Recent restructuring has also brought a partial shift from dry farming to drip irrigation.
