Lazio does not offer one single wine landscape. Mountains, lakes, islands, volcanic hills and the coast all sit within the region, and local soils and climates give the wines very different characters.
Around Castelli Romani, volcanic soils and nearby lakes accompany dry, off-dry, sparkling and novello styles. Cesanese, Lazio's important native black grape, is central to the hills of the Monti Ernici, where Cesanese del Piglio DOCG vineyards lie between 200 and 600 metres on soils that run from clay to sand.
Circeo DOC covers Latina, Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo and Terracina. Its whites are fresh and easy-drinking, with citrus and apple aromas, while its reds and rosatos are based on Merlot. Further north, Tuscia Viterbese includes names such as Aleatico di Gradoli, Colli Etruschi Viterbesi and Vignanello.
Roma DOC stretches across coastal areas, Sabina Romana, Colli Albani, Colli Prenestini and part of Campagna Romana. Sedimentary and volcanic soils meet dry July and August weather and wide day-night temperature shifts. The slower ripening that follows can give its reds aroma, balance, structure and body.
