Rioja

Rioja is a red-wine region between Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. Its three official zones locate the grapes, while Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva describe how red wines have aged.

Rioja runs 100 kilometres from Tormantos to Alfaro, between Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. It is known mainly for red wine, led by Tempranillo and joined by Graciano, Garnacha, Mazuela and Maturana Tinta. White and rosé are made here too. Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental are the official zone names, and a zone wine uses grapes from the named area. Higher Rioja Alta sites ripen later. Rioja Alavesa is generally cooler and more humid, while warmer, drier lower sites in Rioja Oriental can give wines more structure and alcohol. Crianza reds show toasted-oak aromas; Reserva and Gran Reserva reds develop more complex spicy aromas.
