The Douro is a wine area in northeast Portugal, within the river basin that gives it its name. Its steep, mainly schist terraces require manual farming. The hot, arid conditions support ripe, powerful wines, and the dry reds bring intense fruit with firm tannin and acidity. Douro vineyards supply grapes for dry still wines and Port, although Port matures in Gaia.
