Rías Baixas sits in northwestern Galicia, where moderate temperatures, high rainfall, ocean influence and more than 2,200 sunshine hours create a damp Atlantic setting. Its name, "lower rías" in Galician, refers to five estuarine inlets. The area has five sub-regions: Ribeira do Ulla, Val do Salnés, Soutomaior, Condado do Tea and O Rosal. Albariño can ripen fully while retaining medium-to-high natural acidity and an aromatic profile. In the wet climate, growers train vines on high parras to keep air moving through the canopy and limit mildew. Val do Salnés is the coolest and wettest sub-region, associated with granite, rocky ground and coastal freshness. Ribeira do Ulla is inland, with alluvial soils and a less immediately maritime expression. Winemaking choices can keep wines crisp or make them rounder. Barrel fermentation, ageing and lees ageing can add texture and ageing potential.
